Utah Scientific Honors Mary Murray
for 30 Years of Service

Utah Scientific announced that Mary Murray has reached a milestone 30 years of service with the company, and a celebratory luncheon was held on August 8th in her honor. First hired in 1977 by then-President Lyle Keys, Murray was the third Utah Scientific employee. Murray entered into the industry at a time when the “state of the art” was using a light table and tape to place circuits on film. Boards were only two layers and surface mount technologies didn’t exist, in fact, computers didn’t even exist.

Murray has adapted to the changing technologies around her over the years, even though she refuses to turn on lights and keeps her office at a cozy 95 degrees. Today she designs circuit boards with multiple layers and thousands of connections. In fact, some of the components used in current designs have more connections than the complete assemblies she designed just a few years ago. Through all of these changes in technology, she continues to show us why they call PCB design “artwork.”

Tom Harmon, president of Utah Scientific said, “Mary has been instrumental in the success of every single product line Utah Scientific has ever produced, and that in itself, is a pretty significant achievement. She truly has a grasp of what is required and how to design boards to get the job done.”

Murray has outlasted 10 past Utah Scientific, Dynatech, and Artel presidents, including Lyle Keys, Jerry Murphy, Carl Champagne, Ken Schwenk, Terry Hoffman, Dave Keller, George Merrick, Craig Soderquist, Hal Charnley, and Earl Gray.

Jeff Levie, senior hardware engineer at Utah Scientific added, “As a company, we have designed and built about 1,300 different PCB assemblies and have had revisions to almost every one of them. Mary still maintains the information on every design still in production, and that’s pretty remarkable.”

Today, Murray is as responsive and productive as ever and has no immediate retirement plans. Harmon says he is proud to have Mary on board and is confident she’ll continue to make significant contributions for the company going forward.
