CSP Legend Removal

CSP-panel button legends that require changing can be a frustrating but necessary chore as encoding changes occur within a system. This document outlines one technique that may be used to help in the removal of the legends.

The tools required are simply a 'frog pick' or X-acto blade and a piece of tape or sticker. What we refer to as a 'frog pick' is a long needle that looks something like the image below.

To quickly explain the button construction, refer to the drawing at the left. The legend slips into the slot shown on the side of the button and is supported by the internal spring-loaded back. That is what supports the legend securely against the faceplate. The trick to removing the legend is to release that pressure against the legend. Some legends may have been cut to a larger size and therefore the edges of the legend press against the sides of the button and cause a binding effect. The legend may also stick to the faceplate making removal difficult.

First cut the sticker or piece of tape into a strip about a 1/4 inch wide. Then remove the backing off the strip to bare about a 1/4 inch length.

Using the frog pick or X-acto, depress the spring-loaded back directly behind the legend. Carefully slide the sticker into the slot between the legend and the back-plate. Remove the frog pick and press the button firmly to cause the sticker to adhere securely to the legend. Carefully remove the sticker and legend by gently pulling while wiggling the tape side to side.

Prior to inserting new legends, make sure they are trimmed to size. It works best if the top to bottom measurement is only about nine millimeters. The width can be ten millimeters.
